No Time to Waste

Renee's case is proceeding quickly through the courts and her lawyers estimated beginning on June 17, 2005 that Renee would only have 2 years maximum to take her case to the Supreme Court of Canada because her case is being fast tracked through the courts. A decision from the BC Supreme Court ordered Renee to surrender for extradition. Renee and her lawyer appealed this decision to the Minister of Justice's office in Canada and Justice Minister, Irwin Cotler, also ordered Renee surrendered to the US authorities. Renee and her lawyer have entered an appeal to the Court of Appeals and are waiting to hear whether their appeal will be accepted.  John Conroy, Renee's lawyer, says to keep those letters in support of Renee's freedom coming in to Irwin Cotler in order to show him that it would in fact shock the conscience of Canadians to send her back to the US . Every letter sent will be forwarded to the Court of Appeals if Renee's appeal is accepted and the more letters she receives the better! Renee recently sent her own letter to the Minister.

Letterwriting Campaign

The Hon. Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, is ultimately responsible for Renee's extradition and must sign the extradition papers himself. We are encouraging the public to contact the Minister, urging him to intervene and allow Renee to remain in Canada. The letter can be as long or short as you like; the most important thing is to get as many letters to the Minister as soon as possible.

  • Copy and paste it into an email message and send it to rboje@hotmail.com

    or

  • Print it out and mail it to:
    Renee Boje

Renee will forward your letters to the Minister. It is important she has a copy of each letter since they will help her when her case reaches the BC Court of Appeal.

Affidavits

American supporters are in the unique position of being able to help Renee by filing evidence on her behalf. Renee's lawyer, John Conroy, has prepared a document outlining his need for affidavits relating to the War on Drugs, the treatment of women in US prisons, medical marijuana etc. To view the affidavit guidelines, click here.

Please note: All information submitted will be public information and may be read by United States authorities. We need your testimony in the form of a sworn affidavit, but take care not to incriminate yourself.

Media Actions

Renee's story is appearing more frequently in major media outlets. Whenever possible, we urge you to use these windows of opportunity and write letters in support of Renee. The best time to act is right after a story has appeared, but if nothing has appeared recently don't let that hold you back. Media Action examples include:

  • Letters to the Editor - LTEs are widely read and they're a free way to help spread the word about Renee and keep her in the public eye. Newspaper clippings about Renee are posted to the Background section of this site - if you see a recent article, visit the paper's web site and submit an article. Tips on writing LTEs are available from the Media Awareness Project.

  • Forums & Discussion Groups - Many newspapers, radio stations and television broadcasting networks include forums or discussion groups on their web sites. They can be used to keep Renee's story before the public.

  • Request a Story - If nothing has appeared in your area, try sending Renee's story to the local newspaper, radio and television stations and refer them to this web site for more information. Many of the stories that have appeared about Renee wouldn't have happened if a supporter hadn't taken the initiative and made contact.

Contact Your MP

We urge Canadian supporters to contact their local Member of Parliament and educate them about Renee's plight and the issues involved. If enough people take the time to contact their MP, it could go a long way towards keeping Renee in Canada. MPs that receive numerous letters, phone calls, emails or faxes will undoubtably bring this to the Minister of Justice's attention. A sample letter is available by clicking here. You can either:

  • Call or fax your local constituency office - consult the Blue Pages in your phone book.

  • Write to your MP. Letters can be mailed to any member, postage-free, care of this address:
