Hon. [MP’s name here] House of Commons Parliament Buildings Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 Dear [MP's name here], Please be advised that Renee Boje is an American citizen who is currently applying for refugee status in Canada. Ms. Boje faces up to life in a US Federal prison for medical marijuana charges which originate in California, where medical marijuana is supposed to be legal. According to recent reports prepared by both Amnesty International and the UN, Renee can expect to be repeatedly raped and tortured by male prison guards and denied proper food and medical care. Renee experienced some of this abuse first hand, when she was first arrested and spent 72 hours being held at the US Federal Prison in downtown Los Angeles. Renee was strip searched 15 times, two of which were in the presence of male officers, who made lewd and threatening remarks. She was not given food until an hour before she was released on bail. The US has waged a War on Drugs and it is clear that Renee is being persecuted for a victimless crime due to her political opinion. If Renee had been charged in Canada for the same thing, she would face a fine and/or a minimal jail sentence. I sincerely encourage you to apply pressure to Hon. Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice, to refuse to sign the order of removal for Renee to go back to the States. For background on Renee's case, please see her internet web site at www.thecompassionclub.org/renee/ Sincerely, Name Date Address
